5 Foods To Slash Your Risk Of Ovarian Cancer

A silent killer, ovarian cancer strikes women of all ages and is the fifth leading cause of cancer death amongst women worldwide. While certain risk factors—age, hereditary, infertility and hormone therapy can increase the threat of ovarian cancer in your life, turns out you can beat these by eating healthy. 

If experts are to be believed one-third of all the cancers can be prevented with what you eat. In fact, according to the American Cancer Society, every woman can reduce her risk of ovarian cancer by incorporating a diet rich in healthy fruits and vegetables. So here are five foods that can stand guard to protect you against ovarian cancer. 

1. Cruciferous Vegetables
Experts recommend loading on vegetables belonging to the crucifer family—broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, watercress, and turnips. Loaded with antioxidants, these vegetables help negate the effects of free radicals which are known to play a crucial role in causing cancer. Colorful vegetables like tomatoes, bell peppers, carrots, spinach, and kale are also encouraged as they contain high levels of antioxidants.

2. Soy
Include soy in your diet to keep ovarian cancer away. An ample source of protein, dietary fiber, vitamin B and omega-3 fats, soy products like tofu, soy milk and yogurt are thought to reduce the risk of ovarian cancer among older women. 

3. Ginger
An outstanding root for stopping cancer cells in their tracks, ginger destroys ovarian cancer cells in two ways—primarily by apoptosis (programmed cell death) and secondly by controlling inflammation which is often a precursor for cancer. 4. Citrus Fruits
Flavanones most commonly found in citrus fruits like oranges, grapes, lemons and other fruits like berries and apples have the ability to curtail the development of ovarian cancer. They do this by adjusting key cellular signaling pathways and regulating cancer-inflammation pathways. Flavonoids are also known to exhibit antioxidant properties which help in fending off free radicals.  

5. Green Tea
Research suggests that drinking two cups of green tea daily can slash your risk of ovarian cancer by almost half. The high levels of antioxidants present in green tea not only help prevent and repair DNA damage but also curb the growth and spread of cancer cells.
